Republican Candidate for City Council - District Two

Matt Cotner is a commercial banker for SunTrust Bank. After serving as a Captain in the United States Army, he and his wife Liz moved to Greenville in 2001. Before SunTrust, Matt has worked for a locally headquartered financial holding company and a start-up financial institution also based in Greenville.

A graduate of Leadership Greenville, Matt has served in a variety of volunteer boards and positions including the United Way Young Philanthropist Chair, Friends of the Greenville Zoo, Treasurer, and the Metropolitan Arts Council.

During his time in these positions, Matt launched the Born Learning Trail Initiative; the first one in South Carolina, worked with Zoo and City Leadership to facilitate an American Zoological Association accreditation and organization transition, and assisted the Executive Director to establish an Endowment at the Metropolitan Arts Council.

Currently, Matt serves as Co-Chair for the 2017 March of Dimes, Walk for Babies and President of the Christ Church Episcopal Endowment Corporation. Additional volunteer and leadership experience includes the founding Chair of the Christ Church Episcopal Church Budget Committee, and a member of its Finance Committee, and Endowment Committees, Chair of the St Mary’s Catholic School Golf Tournament, and on the Board of Directors for the Rotary Club of Greenville. Matt has led Cub Scout Dens, managed Habitat for Humanity builds, and served as a Rotary Reader at St Anthony of Padua Catholic School.

Matt was recognized by Greenville Business Magazine as one of Greenville’s “Best and Brightest Under 35” in 2010.  

A graduate of Vanderbilt University and the University of South Carolina’s Moore School of Business, Cotner resides in Greenville, has been married to Liz for 17 years, and has two children, Matthew (12) and Mary Branch (10).
